Theatre Update: [Heaven’s Feel] III, Tokyo Godfathers, The Wonderland

Making sure no one was left wondering, Aniplex of America confirmed earlier this morning that Fate/stay night [Heaven’s Feel] III. spring song will be headed to Cineplex locations in Canada. The final entry in the Heaven’s Feel storyline opens on March 28th in Japan with its Canada and U.S. debut set for May 5th. The two prior films were screened across Canadian theatres in January 2018 and March 2019. More info as it comes.

In other minor Canadian theatre news, The Wonderland will be screened by Toronto’s Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre on April 19th at 1PM. Directed by Keiichi Hara with character designs from Ilya Kuvshinov, the film is distributed in Canada and the United States by Eleven Arts. The company had pledged to get the film into Canadian theatres, but as far as I can tell, this screening is its first north of the border. While Landmark Cinemas had put up a page with a February 5th opening, that did not seem to actually happen. In the United States, Wonderland was largely released to independents and has done nominal business at the box-office since late January.

Some other smaller/local runs:

  • The 2020 remaster of Tokyo Godfathers is starting its limited release next week. Calgary’s Globe Cinema will run it on the 9th, with Vancouver’s Rio Theatre set for the 15th. Both are scheduled to be screened in Japanese with English subtitles.
  • Ride Your Wave is still screening at Vancouver’s Cineplex International Village location until the 8th with a Rio screening on the 7th.
  • Princess Cinema in Kitchener will screen Perfect Blue on the 19th and 21st.
  • Select Cineplex locations will continue running My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising until at least the 12th. It will likely go on for longer.
  • Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Cineplex location’s run of Weathering With You is still trucking, with dates (dub/sub) also going to the 12th. It’s also running at indies like Kingston’s Screening Room, Ottawa’s Mayfair, St. Foy’s Le Clap, and Toronto’s Paradise.

TV Update: Beyblade Burst Rise on Télétoon, Bakugan: Armored Alliance on YTV

With English Canada set to receive Beyblade Burst Rise this weekend, French Canada won’t have to wait long. Télétoon will debut the anime’s fourth season on March 14th at 2PM. Premieres will air on Saturdays and Sundays. The channel aired Beyblade Burst Turbo’s finale on January 12th.

YTV will air Bakugan: Armored Alliance. Battle Planet’s run wrapped up last Friday and the channel will move onto season 2 in its Friday 3PM slot starting tomorrow. YTV’s airing of Bakugan (which began in January 2019) marks the first time the channel has regularly broadcast an anime series since 2014. Armored Alliance’s premieres began on Teletoon last month, with new episodes airing every Saturday.

All times in Eastern.

Zo Zo Zombie showcased at AITF, more Bakugan in the pipeline

With a debut on Crave set for March 20th, Toronto toymaker Spin Master unveiled its Zo Zo Zombie property at the American International Toy Fair in NYC last month. The 100 x 3-minute comedy web-series will be supported by a limited line of collectables and plush set to debut in the fall. You can check out photos of the items on display here, here and here.

Blog reader Liam pointed out that Spin Master released 15 clips from the series on Vlipsy in November. The snippets showcase character designs that are more or less identical to the 2017 Japan-only YouTube shorts, though the animation is all new. The different style for the background art might suggest these new shorts aren’t animated by Ascension.

Additionally, during Spin Master’s Toy Fair investor presentation, it was stated that a third season of Bakugan was in production, with a fourth in development. No ETA on any of that.

Thanks Liam!
