Nelvana Set To Reboot Anime Classic Gatchaman

With Bakugan and Beyblade in their rear view, Corus Entertainment is looking for new merchandise phenomenons to grow their kids business. They’ve spoken about Mysticons (due out in late 2015) in the past, and today Colin Bohm, Vice President and Head of Corus Kids, unveiled another important piece at Corus’ 2014 Investor Day presentation: a revival of Tatsunoko Production’s 1972 superhero anime series Gatchaman.

Bohm stated that Gatchaman was chosen due to it being an uncommon anime franchise that has shown itself to transcend both eastern and western culture. This means broadcasters, licensees and retailers are familiar with it. The property also naturally extends itself to a product line of action figures and other role-play toys. Lastly, the team behind the show are all well versed in what it takes to successfully create a brand and will be ready prior to the official launch.

While details are scarce, the show is being re-imagined for “audiences of today” with production handled by Nelvana and the Japanese team behind Beyblade. Using the title of Gatchaman‘s first English adaptation, Battle of the Planets is set to launch fall 2017. A promo (which you can listen to here) was shown to those in attendance at Corus’ Investor Day meeting, but no visuals other than the slide above were shared online.

Tatsunoko has revived Gatchaman multiple times, most recently with last year’s Japanese live action film and Gatchaman Crowds, the television anime series which is receiving a second season next year.
