PlayStation Network Video Store launches in Canada

The PlayStation Network Video Store was launched in the US last June, and has been launched in Canada July 1. The Store has (almost nearly all American) movies, and tv shows in SD and HD. Content can be played on a PS3, PSP, or PC (via MediaGo). Log in before July 14, and get a free SD copy of that crummy Charlie’s Angel movie (code to be sent via email).

To get to the Video Store, simply sign in to the PlayStation Store (via PS3, PSP, or Media Go), and hit the Video tab on the top.

While the selection is only going to get bigger as the back catalogue increases here’s the current anime series available:

Afro Samurai (Complete First Season)
Basilisk (Complete Series)
Bleach (Episodes 64-91)
Death Note (Episodes 21-37)
Desert Punk (Complete Series)
Mobile Suit Gundam: UC Unicorn (Episode 1)
Naruto (Episodes 206-220)
Naruto Shippuden (Episodes 27-39)
Samurai Champloo (Complete Series)
Witchblade (Complete Series)

Movies:

Blood: The Last Vampire
Castle of Cagliostro
Dante’s Inferno
Dead Leaves
Dead Space: Downfall
DragonBall: Evolution (Live Action)
Ghost In The Shell
Ghost In The Shell: Individual Eleven
Ghost In The Shell: Solid State Society
Ghost In The Shell: The Laughing Man
Karas: The Prophecy
Karas: The Revelation
Macross Plus: Movie Edition
Strait Jacket
Street Fighter Alpha
Street Fighter Alpha: Generations
Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie
Sword For Truth
Vampire Wars

You’re allowed to rent or buy the movies. Rentals last two days I believe. The price varies per feature and per definition. You can only buy TV episodes. Price varies per definition, standard definition is $1.99 an episode, and I forget the high def’s cost.

Selection wise on the movie front, there’s a bunch of the recent major features from all the big studios except Warner (Disney, FOX, Universal, Paramount, and Sony are all represented). There’s actually over 1200 movies on the Store right now, and it’s going to only increase as more are uploaded weekly. On the TV side you have over 50 different series represented from networks such as AMC, The Comedy Network (Programming is Comedy Central programming), FOX, HBO, History Channel, MTV, NBC, NHL, Nickelodeon, and Spike along with content from Sony (Boondocks, Breaking Bad, Community, etc.), Marvel (motion comics), and FUNimation (the above).

The problem with that is the series are often missing the previous seasons or movies in a series. You’ll have Avatar: The Last Airbender on the Store, but only seasons 1 and 3. Likewise you’d have Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on the Store, but not Transformers. I imagine that with time the back catalogue of missing movies, and seasons will be filled.

I bought a SD copy of the first episode of Samurai Champloo. The quality was great on my TV as well as my PSP. It was dub-only.

The US Store houses other series like Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, various Media Blaster series, and the [formerly] PlayStation Network exclusive anime series made by Bones Studio, X’amd among many more.

Now all we need is the Comic Book store the US and Europe has.

Welcome to I Miss Bionix

I Miss Bionix is a fan run blog depicting the current news of Japanese animation in Canada, as well as remembering the good times when it wasn’t so bleak. Check back often as the blog will be updated with new videos, a forum, and more.

Still getting used to writing an actual blog, so it might take a while to get things going. But it will eventually be there.
