Cartoon Network Canada will not be airing Space Dandy

mainvShinichiro Watanabe’s (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) Space Dandy is being primed to be a big deal in the world of anime. Bandai Visual’s announced an extensive global broadcasting plan that will see the show air in a variety of countries within hours of the Japanese airing, but they seem to have been mistaken as far as North America is concerned. While their press release states that the show will be airing on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, so far only the US branch has confirmed that they’ll be taking part in this release. As Cartoon Network Canada isn’t a 1:1 feed of the US network skepticism was going to exist on whether or not the show was going to air in this country. I have confirmed with a Cartoon Network Canada representative that the channel has no plans on airing Space Dandy, and that Bandai Visual was most likely mistaken with their press release.

Funimation has picked up the series for North American distribution, and will be behind the dub airing in the US. Here’s the description of the show, and its production staff from Bandai Visual:

  1. Funi’s press release also says “North America” But I’m sure it’s just the people in the states forgetting once again they aren’t “North America”.

    • I can give a pass on Bandai Visual’s ignorance, but that’s just embarrassing Funimation.

  2. this seems like a terrible anime, this reminds me more of “team galaxy” this shows fails to capture people’s attention.

Its a shame really, cause I had my hopes up..and yeah, we can understand Bandai’s error but this is simply embarrassing on funimations part. Oh well, can’t say I’m THAT surprised that Canada opted out again

  3. If airing in the US, it’s not incorrect to say it’s airing in North America.

If only some Canadians would stop thinking that Canada is the country in North America.

It IS incorrect to say its airing in NA if its only in the states. Here, go read that the whole continent is named North America as a whole. Its ethically incorrect to group USA as the whole continent just like you don’t say all of Europe if its only showing in France etc..

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_America

    • North America is a continent comprising of three countries; Canada, United States of America, and Mexcio. As Cartoon Network in Mexico is in a similar situation as it is in Canada, I’m going to assume they will not be airing Space Dandy. If only one country is airing a show, is it fair to say it’s airing in the entire continent?

Cartoon Network Canada? Seriously, did anyone actually believe that? Until they launch a proper Toonami block (and believe me, their version of Adult Swim could use it), I wasn’t holding my breath for a second. If anything, this will end up on SuperChannel (assuming they still run anime anymore).

Can’t say I really not that all surprised… Funi says they will be running it on there streaming webpage I’ll proably check out a few eps there and pick up when it get released as a nice box set.

  4. I know if MTV2 or G4 started airing anime again, at least some of the shows Super Channel aired, they would draw in a huge audience. I can guarantee you no one is watching Hollywood Heights or Bang goes the Theory.

    • Some Canadians are DUMB.

It is correct to say its airing in North America even if it is only in the US.
