Odds & Ends: Canadian Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Side of Dimensions DVD/BD dilemma; Turning Mecard product launch [Updated 8/14/2017]

4K Media, gatekeepers of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, have been embracing the original Japanese version of their shows this year. For the first time ever, the newest entry in the series, VRAINS, is getting a subtitled simulcast as it airs in Japan … as long as you don’t live in Canada and a small handful of other countries. Even Dark Side of Dimensions, the most recent theatrical film, received a subtitled run in theatres … as long as you lived in the US. That seems to be another one of this year’s themes for Yu-Gi-Oh! anime. While not deliberate (needs to be said, we were supposed to get that sub run), it unfortunately seems likely Dark Side of Dimensions’ home video release will continue that. Continue reading

Canadian Theatrical News: Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions [Updated 2/17/2017]

It’s hard to believe that we’re just a month shy of the sixth anniversary of the last Yu-Gi-Oh! film’s US theatrical release. My post on Bonds Beyond Time skipping Canada during its brief big screen run still stands as one of the most popular I’ve ever written. I suppose that’s a testament to the franchise’s enduring popularity that a frankly throwaway hour-long crossover could elicit such a response. I guess that’s why the franchise is spawning a seventh anime series. Bringing the fandom to its roots, to a time before Arc-V, Zexal, 5Ds and GX, the latest Yu-Gi-Oh! theatrical feature is a twentieth anniversary celebration of the original manga series’ debut in Weekly Shonen Jump. After a successful run in Japan last year, it’s headed to theatres in Canada and the U.S. late this month. Continue reading

Beyblade Burst premieres return on Teletoon, Amazon Prime eyes Canadian launch + Major Theatrical Update

So far, Beyblade Burst has had a bumpy ride in Canada. It premiered to little pre-release promotion on September 10th and then immediate confusion as the second episode premiered the next day (even the official social media handler thought it would be a re-run). Then, after four weekends and eight episodes, debuts abruptly ended on October 2nd as the show began a repeat run on both Teletoon and Disney XD Canada. We’ll never know what happened, but some solid guesses would be that airing two episodes a week of a show that (as of October 2nd) had only run twenty-six episodes in Japan probably makes things difficult for the English production team. Or, maybe Sunrights and Hasbro wanted to make sure we didn’t get too far ahead of their pending US run.

Either way, that all looks to be in the past as Teletoon’s schedule is listing a return to premieres with episode nine, “Wyvron in the Way,” set for November 26th at 3PM. Neither TV Passport nor Teletoon’s schedule list a premiere for Sunday; with a repeat of episode seven expected to run. I guess that’s the end of double premieres. Unless Teletoon pulls some holiday pre-emptions, Canada should still be ahead of the US by three episodes after Disney XD’s premiere event.
