Canadian Theatrical News: Dragon Ball Super: Broly

Funimation and Toei Animation are bringing the first Dragon Ball Super theatrical film to cinemas across Canada this January. Introducing the legendary Super Saiyan Broly into the main anime’s storyline, the twentieth movie in the franchise was once again produced in collaboration with series creator Akira Toriyama. Canadian Theatrical News: Dragon Ball Z Saiyan Double Feature

Following September’s run of Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, Toei Animation and Cineplex are back at it again with another Dragon Ball Z theatrical event this November. Now it’s a double feature consisting of the 1990 TV special Bardock – The Father of Goku and the 1995 theatrical film Fusion Reborn. Like the Broly event, the double feature is being presented in Canada and the United States through a new remaster. Continue reading

In preparation for the first Dragon Ball Super feature film, Toei Animation and Cineplex are bringing Dragon Ball Z movies to the big screen. First up is 1993’s Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, presented in a remastered format. Canadian Theatrical News: Kizumonogatari Part 1: Tekketsu & Digimon Adventure tri. – Chapter 1: Reunion

The summer has been kind of a dry spell for theatrical anime screenings in Canada, but we’re entering the fall with two highly anticipated multi-part film series.

First off, there’s a saying that applies to both this film’s theatrical run and my reporting on it. You see, while Aniplex of America announced a Canadian screening for Kizumonogatari Part 1: Tekketsu, the first theatrical feature in SHAFT’s adaptation of Nisio Isin’s ever sprawling Monogatari light novel series, last month, the film originally ran in select US theatres as early as February. We’re running so close to the wire that Aniplex has already scheduled the second film, Nekketsu, for an October release in the US (presumably if Kizu does well, we’ll get the sequels eventually). The Boy and the Beast gets Canadian home video release and theatrical screening locations; World Trigger gets Canadian dub [Updated 5/15/2016]

The Canadian release of Mamoru Hosoda’s The Boy and the Beast has been a bit mysterious. First we heard the news that while Funimation held the US rights to the film, they didn’t have the distribution rights to Canada. That almost never happens. Then we found out that Toronto’s Mongrel Media had picked up the film for a late May theatrical and on-demand release. I’ve managed to get in touch with Mongrel to clear up any unanswered questions.
