The Boy and the Beast gets Canadian home video release and theatrical screening locations; World Trigger gets Canadian dub [Updated 5/15/2016]

The Canadian release of Mamoru Hosoda’s The Boy and the Beast has been a bit mysterious. First we heard the news that while Funimation held the US rights to the film, they didn’t have the distribution rights to Canada. That almost never happens. Then we found out that Toronto’s Mongrel Media had picked up the film for a late May theatrical and on-demand release. I’ve managed to get in touch with Mongrel to clear up any unanswered questions. Canadian Theatrical News: The Boy and the Beast, Belladonna of Sadness, but no Project Itoh: The Empire of Corpses

I could rant about availability issues that arise when a distributor buys global rights to a library of content despite only operating in five countries. I’ll instead talk about some movies you can (and can’t) check out at your local theatres.

First up is an update on Mamoru Hosoda’s The Boy & The Beast.

“Beast” is a coming-of-age tale about Kyuta, a lonely Japanese boy living in Shibuya and Kumatetsu, a lonesome beast inhabiting Jutengai, an imaginary world. One day, Kyuta forays into the imaginary world and, as he’s looking for his way back, meets Kumatetsu who becomes his guide and friend. That chance encounter leads them to many adventures filled with fantasy and action.

Canadian Theatrical News: Only Yesterday, Psycho-Pass: The Movie, The Boy and the Beast

There’s a trio of quality anime flicks hitting the Canadian silver screen soon.

We start off with a 1991 classic that opened only yesterday (before you ask, no, this post isn’t late because I wanted to make that pun). GKIDS is presenting Isao Takahata’s and Studio Ghibli’s Only Yesterday in North American theatres for the first time ever. Continue reading
