Canadian Theatrical News: Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale [Updated 3/31/2017]

In possibly the fastest turnaround from the Japanese release for a film covered on this blog, Aniplex of America, Cineplex and Eleven Arts are bringing the first big screen journey of Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online light novel franchise to Canadian theatres this March. This comes just weeks after the film’s Japanese debut on February 18th, though Canada has to wait a few days after the release in the U.S. on March 7th. Suffice to say these screenings will be limited to just the Japanese version with English subtitles.

A-1 Pictures, the Aniplex owned studio behind the Sword Art Online television anime, has returned to animated the film based on an original story by Kawahara. Continue reading

Canadian Theatrical News: Kizumonogatari Part 1: Tekketsu & Digimon Adventure tri. – Chapter 1: Reunion

The summer has been kind of a dry spell for theatrical anime screenings in Canada, but we’re entering the fall with two highly anticipated multi-part film series.

First off, there’s a saying that applies to both this film’s theatrical run and my reporting on it. You see, while Aniplex of America announced a Canadian screening for Kizumonogatari Part 1: Tekketsu, the first theatrical feature in SHAFT’s adaptation of Nisio Isin’s ever sprawling Monogatari light novel series, last month, the film originally ran in select US theatres as early as February. We’re running so close to the wire that Aniplex has already scheduled the second film, Nekketsu, for an October release in the US (presumably if Kizu does well, we’ll get the sequels eventually). First two Madoka Magica films to get limited nationwide theatrical releases this month

urlAniplex of America, and Cineplex have partnered up to bring the first two Puella Magi Madoka Magica films to over 25 Canadian cities this month. The first film will be screened on March 14th, with the second film scheduled for the 20th. Here’s the list of participating theatres:
