Canadian Theatrical News: Haikara-San: Here Comes Miss Modern – Part 1

Eleven Arts are teaming up with Cineplex to release the first of two Haikara-San: Here Comes Miss Modern films in Canada this June. Adapted by Nippon Animation from Waki Yamato’s 1975-1977 manga series Here Comes Miss Modern, the first film opened in Japan last November, with the second set for sometime this year. The Canadian release is timed to coincide with its launch in the United States.

The first entry is directed and written by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, who’s previously helmed projects like Gundam UnicornLe Chevalier D’Eon, Zipang, the original Hunter x Hunter anime, the majority of animated Rurouni Kenshin adaptations, and, uh … Neo-Yokio. Michiru Ōshima, who worked on D’Eon, as well as other shows like 2003’s Fullmetal Alchemist and Little Witch Academia, composed the film’s scores. Among the manga’s many live-action adaptations, Nippon Animation themselves previously created a 42 episode anime series based on it between June 1978 and March 1979.

During the Taisho era of 1918, 17-year-old Benio Hanamura thrives on bucking tradition. As a boisterous and quarrelsome tomboy, Miss Hanamura leads a life of kendo and tree-climbing adventure with her best friends Tamaki and Ranmaru. Benio determines to find love on her own, though her family has other plans. Benio will encounter tests of love, independence, and friendship during wartime.

The feature-length adaptation of Waki Yamato’s popular manga.
