Canadian Theatrical News: Resident Evil: Vendetta

2017 has been a busy year for the Resident Evil franchise. Paul W.S. Anderson’s live action film series (that I like to call Alice in Zombieland) came to a close with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (I’m sure it’ll get rebooted by someone else in 3-5 years). Capcom unleashed the first person Resident Evil 7 onto the world and are preparing to re-release Resident Evil: Revelations. They may even share a glimpse at the upcoming Resident Evil 2 remake sometime this year. Now Sony Pictures is preparing to release another film, but this one’s animated and brings back a more familiar look to the series that fans may have missed from the latest game.

Resident Evil: Vendetta is the third CG-animated feature in the series, following 2009’s Resident Evil: Degeneration and 2012’s Resident Evil: Damnation. The earlier two were brought to life by Digital Frontier, the same studio behind this fall’s upcoming Infini-T Force anime. For Vendetta, Capcom and Sony enlisted the help of Sega’s Marza Animation Planet, who worked on Toei’s 2013 CG Captain Harlock movie. By doing that, they’ve also traded in the first two films’ director, Makoto Kamiya, for Takanori Tsujimoto, the son of Capcom’s CEO … Also unlike the first two? Sony Pictures, under their Stage6 Films label, will be giving Resident Evil: Vendetta a theatrical screening in Canada. Showcasing the brand’s global strength, our June 19th date is just weeks after the film opens in Japan on May 27, 2017.

Tasked with capturing a notorious weapons trafficker named Glenn Arias, Chris Redfield of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance storms a mysterious mansion backed up by a crack team. Despite coming face to face with his target, Chris is forced to abandon his mission and flee after witnessing something unbelievable. His experiences prompt him to seek out Professor Rebecca Chambers, a researcher investigating a virus which reanimates the dead as bloodthirsty zombies. After Rebecca is attacked and her lab is destroyed, she teams up with Chris and the pair enlist the help of special agent Leon S. Kennedy in order to take down Arias before he can unleash a deadly chemical on the people of New York City.

As always, in case of any last minute changes, keep your eyes peeled on Cineplex’s page and the film’s official website.

The Fathom Events listing boasts that the screening will include an exclusive introduction from the cast and behind the scenes videos. Will those be in the Canadian release? Probably. AFAIK, most Resident Evil games are released with English VA in Japan, and this film’s Japanese promo material features the English cast, so don’t expect any Japanese language options.
