YTV takes a chance with Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal starting June 2
Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal is the fifth Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series and follows Yuma, a would be Duel Monsters champion who has the heart, but not necessarily the skills to make his dreams come true. This is when the mysterious spirit named Astral barges into his life and takes Yuma onto a wild trading card game adventure. The series is a lot more Saturday morning-esque than its predecessor, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds which took place in a post-apocalyptic world starring a older protagonist. Zexal on the other hand takes place in the near future, with Yuma being young enough to where schoolyard bullying can happen.
The show’s younger off-beat Yu-Gi-Oh! redux feel fits the show’s US broadcaster, the CW4Kids Toonzai. However, YTV’s broadcast of the series takes place literally weeks before a decision by 4Kids will be made to sell off the franchise. Whether or not this will effect YTV’s broadcast of the series has yet to be seen, though it should be stated that Saban Brands has put in a bid for the series. Saban Brands has a working relationship with Corus (YTV’s parent) and in fact produces Power Rangers, one of the shows on YTV’s anime lineup:
11:30am – Beyblade: Metal Masters
12:00pm – Pokemon BW: Rival Destinies
12:30pm – Power Rangers Super Samurai
1:00pm – Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal
1:30pm – Monsuno
Okay, they make the only non-anime show in that run of programming, but meh. I guess it needs to be stated that this is the most anime YTV has aired at a single time in a long while.
Thanks goes to Mohji, and Richard on Facebook for pointing this out!
