Teletoon and Turner partner up to bring Cartoon Network to Canada
First it was Nickelodeon Canada, then it was Disney XD Canada, and now it’s the long awaited – Cartoon Network Canada. Teletoon and Turner Broadcasting have announced a brand new partnership that will see Teletoon and its sister channels become the exclusive home to Cartoon Network, and [adult swim] programming, alongside 2000 half hours of classic Cartoon Network, and [adult swim] content. But that’s not all, together the two have announced a brand new ad-supported digital specialty channel called… Cartoon Network! How original! How Canadian! The channel will run like the U.S. based Cartoon Network runs – in two blocks, the Cartoon Network block between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET/PT, followed by an Adult Swim late-night lineup commencing at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The two animation behemoths announced this partnership as Teletoon celebrates its 15th Anniversary, and Cartoon Network celebrates its 20th. It hasn’t been confirmed, but I’d be willing to bet Corus Entertainment, and Astral Media (Teletoon’s owners) will be launching Cartoon Network on the CRTC approved “Teletoon KaPow!” broadcasting license.
The new network is set to launch later this year, and the branding will be seen across standard and high definition linear television, Video on Demand, broadband and mobile platforms. TÉLÉTOON, Quebec’s French oriented Teletoon sister will serve its audience by launching a Cartoon Network programming block, along with making programming available online, through mobile and Video on Demand. Canada joins 23 other regions in the world by adopting the CN branding. Yay, Canadian culture erosion!
I should stress, there’s no guarantee programming will be the exact same as the U.S. network – as we have seen with other brands imported up north. There is no guarantee that Bleach, or Durarara will air on this channel. The press release for this new venture stresses the licensing of Cartoon Network programming – anime fans need to realize that Cartoon Network’s only “anime” produced stuff is things like Thundercats, and Bakugan. These programming deals don’t include third party content like anime. It would be a nice way to get Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood out of the ghetto that is Superchannel, but alas…
There lies the problem with the import brands. They’re just that – the brand. What we’ve gotten in Nick Canada, and the such are the not the U.S. networks, but some Canadian equivalent. That’s what erks me. Disney XD, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network programming is already well assimilated into the Family Channel, YTV, and Teletoon branding, so why not extend your own home grown branding rather than rely on some foreign import? Kids aren’t going to care if they watch iCarly on YTV or Nickelodeon Canada because at the end of the day all that matters is that they get to watch iCarly. In fact, I’d imagine kids in Canada are more familiar with the YTV, Family, and Teletoon branding than their U.S. alternatives, so why import them? Instead of Nickelodeon Canada, why don’t we have YTV2? Realistically, that is what Nick Canada is. It’s an admission that our Canadian branding is worthless, and I don’t think that’s right. Teletoon’s been around for 15 years in Canada, that’s exactly 15 years longer than Cartoon Network’s branding has.

I agree the branding is lame. I wonder if it was done at the insistence of the Cartoon Network in order to expand their world-wide brand recognition and Teletoon didn’t have enough reason to resist.
Many other counties have localized Cartoon Network channels rather then their own brands. However, those places don’t have the ownership restrictions we have so they are owned by Turner.
If this channel is going to be in HD, when will Teletoon switch to HD? (More importantly how long will it take Rogers to carry the HD version?)
Now that Teletoon at Night is filled up with Fox shows, they will have a place to bring back Adult Swim programming. Maybe they will put on Untalkative Bunny to fill out the Cancon.
Man, just when I get my hopes up that we may finally get good anime back to Canadian airwaves, I discover that there’s no guarantee it’s coming.
I see no reason for them not to try this, since anime is a pretty big, if still niche, thing in the US. Not to mention Cartoon Network’s history with the medium is a mostly glorious one.
But my main concern is with the kind of programming that these networks pick up. And it dosen’t just end at anime.
Why hasn’t Nick Canada picked up “Are You Afraid Of The Dark” yet? Hell, they co-produced it. Why hasn’t Teletoon Retro added classic cartoons like “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and the 90s adaptation of “X-Men” to their lineup? Why didn’t G4 Canada air “Marvel Anime”? Why are mainstream success stories like “Dragon Ball Z Kai” and “InuYasha: The Final Act” not airing on YTV, the channel that made both orignial series smash hits.
It just isn’t fair. And the end of the day, it just isn’t fair.

Teletoon’s first dips rights to Marvel animation expired last month. All Marvel animation is now the domain of Astral Media and the Family/Disney XD network of channels.

So… does this mean Canada may pick up a anime channel of some sort?
Not at all. It just means Teletoon will be launching a channel called Cartoon Network. Corus Entertainment’s anime channel is dead.
I like cartoon network better and I think it’s a great idea that they bring it to Canada.
I for one am pretty stoked about this news. Teletoon’s commitment to Cartoon Network-produced programming has been abysmal as of late – anything that’s not Ben 10, Robot Chicken, or Hole in the Wall (??) anyway.
It’s seemed to me that Cartoon Network’s style and raison d’etre (that is to say their branding) has always kind of clashed with Teletoon’s. CN’s brand of off-kilter, cult audience programming (especially with Adult Swim) has never really been the more mainstream ratings-chasing Teletoon’s cup of tea. The way Adventure Time got treated seemed to be proof of that. And the less said about their total abdication of Adult Swim (outside of RC) to G4, the better.
My point is, Teletoon has got its own stuff going on. It’s been my opinion for a long time that the two entities are different enough to coexist. I’m glad that’s finally happening. Wish it had happened like 10 years ago when Toonami was at its peak, but I’ll still take it. On a dedicated digital channel, CN’s shows will finally get the room and the opportunity they need to shine. The promise of over 2000 hours of classic programming makes me hopeful that the Canadian edition might even be better than its US counterpart.
The possibility of no anime is kind of a blow, but it’s not like CN US has that much of it to begin with these days. Still, Big O and IGPX are technically Cartoon Network co-pros that we just could possibly get access to. And who knows, CN Canada actually may decide to dabble in the anime pool at some point. True, these US-branded digital channels don’t have a history of going for too many outside acquisitions, but there’s always hope. When (and if) InuYasha Final Act finally airs on Adult Swim, Canada’s Adult Swim may just want to follow suit (and the way things are right now, there’s no way YTV is going to air it).

I’m actually fine with CN coming to Canada. CN, Nickelodeon and Disney XD are secondary brands to Teletoon, YTV and Family. As long as the relationship is kept that way, there’s no harm in their being around.
I don’t think CN Canada will dabble in Japanese animation, though I think CN Canada’s a more exciting prospect than the Nick/DXD portovers, if only for [adult swim.]
I actually hope CN Canada will greenlight some [as]-like shows. Teletoon makes its token At Night offering, then calls it a year. I know I’m calling for the secondary brand to be more active than the primary brand, but Teletoon’s track record with original adult programming is poor at best. Fugget About It’s not going to change that.
The FUNimation has plans to come to Canada in the future.
Since Astral owns Marvel In Canada does that mean Disney XD Canada will get Marvel shows Like the American Disney XD??

I don’t think so because the comming in 2012 promo on Disney XD Canada did not not show any marvel shows but the American one showed the new spider man and the avengers.
So basically, there’s no reason to get excited for this.
The real question is how many people will actually shell out yet more money for CN Canada.
Like Disney XD in Canada, I don’t think it will reflect the lineups of the american channel. For instance Disney XD airs Ultimate Spiderman and the Avengers new in HD during a marvel block. Disney XD canada does not. this is just going to be more rehash of old standard def programs that have been bought and paid for 10times over. there will be in some instances 12different ads during commercial breaks. BELL AND ROGERS AND SHAW have stifled the growth and innovation of canadian content by being service providers and content providers. it’s pathetic how terrible television has become in canada. WE PAY FOR PROGRAMS NOT ADS. THIS
channel that will not promote innovation. It will be a recycled rehash of standard def programming that even broadcast in HD will look terrible because they will not go in and upscale anything. we’ve owned ps3s blu ray players and hd tvs for over a decade and these people are now only after 6 years starting to offer teletoon hd, CANADA is BUNK. i only have to pay 45$ for a marjane doctors note in Cali as apposed to 200 in toronto. CANADA by having absolutly no backbone and for letting the crtc be lobbyed by bell/rogers WE all suffer now. 200$ for cell and home phone tv and no internet, what the hell is going on in the true north weak and unfree.
